Colorado Scottish Festival & Rocky Mountain Highland Games
August 9-10, 2008
This weekend, the band attended the Colorado Scottish Festival & Rocky Mountain Highland Games in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. On Saturday, we had two performances scheduled for the day, the opening ceremony at noon and the closing ceremony at 5pm. Both performances were massed bands, which means that we performed alongside the 5 other bands in attendance at the festival. We marched across the competition field together, each band filling one or two files, each with their Pipe Major and Pipe Sergeant at the front. I hear it was quite a sight to see the huge mass of pipers marching toward the crowd playing Scotland the Brave! Since the band did not participate in a competition on Saturday, there was plenty of free time to walk about the festival and enjoy such things as haggis and shortbread.
Sunday morning, we headed back to the festival for a more serious day. We had the same two massed bands performances as Saturday, but we also had our second competition for the season. It was overcast and 83-85 degrees, weather much more favorable for piping than the last competition. We ended up getting 4th place overall, 3rd place in piping. Not too shabby for the second competition in our "Confidence-Building Season."
